Elles ont ouvert des perspectives inédites sur sa position sociale, son ménage, sa foi religieuse, sa technique et l'influence de son milieu sur son oeuvre. Autant de connaissances nouvelles, qui nous permettent de nous approcher plus que jamais de l'artiste magistral que fut Vermeer.
Cet ouvrage, conçu par Irma Boom, plonge le lecteur dans l'univers pictural immensément riche du maître de Delft. Y sont évoquées les 37 oeuvres qui lui sont attribuées, et les nombreux détails de ces tableaux nous font voir l'art de Vermeer avec un étonnement toujours renouvelé.

Hans Memling (vers 1435-1494), artiste clé parmi les Primitifs flamands, est intimement lié à la ville de Bruges. Dirk Braeckman (°1958) en Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) gaan met hun unieke oeuvres de confrontatie en dialoog met elkaar aan. Hoewel het werk van de twee kunstenaars meer dan een halve eeuw uit elkaar liggen, zijn er talloze visuele en thematische gelijkenissen. Spilliaert creëerde melancholische composities van architecturale elementen, verstilde interieurs en benevelde zeezichten.
Braeckman, sterk beïnvloed door Spilliaert, gebruikt fotografie om gesluierde beelden te maken die balanceren tussen droom en werkelijkheid. Ze delen een fascinatie voor verstilling en isolatie, vaak uitgewerkt in monochrome tinten en bijzondere kadreringen.

In recent years, photographer Bieke Depoorter developed an overriding interest in astronomy. She sought out amateur stargazers, visited state-of-the-art observatories and researched the history of the field. Gradually, it became clear that her interest in astronomy was linked to lost memories from her past. After all, the night sky is a kind of shared memory; the light of celestial bodies takes hundreds, thousands or millions of (light) years to reach our eyes on earth. In Carte Mémoire, photographer Bieke Depoorter explores the power and fragility of memory, the human desire for objectivity and the elusive nature of 'truth'. She does this by interweaving photographs of amateur and professional stargazers, diary-inspired texts and fragments of astronomical history, in which often-forgotten female astronomers play a role.

In the turbulent global context following the fall of the Russian Empire and the October Revolution, Georgia declared its independence in 1918. Between then and the beginning of Soviet rule in 1921, an Avant-Garde creative scene burgeoned. Artists met, mainly in the many taverns and cafés in Kutaisi and the capital Tbilisi, to organize multidisciplinary events. Their frequent collaborations and interactions, which bore the imprint of Georgian tradition and Western and Eastern influences, took various forms: paintings, drawings, films, photos, performances and typographical experiments. Divergent movements such as Symbolism/Neo-Symbolism, Futurism, Dadaism, Zaum, Expressionism, Cubism and Cubo-Futurism existed side by side in unprecedented creative turbulence. This book tells the unknown story of a vibrant Avant-Garde in the Caucasus, born in the taverns of Tbilisi - artistic laboratories where anything was possible, but where Soviet censorship lurked. Extensively illustrated with works by Elene Akhvlediani, Gigo Gabashvili, Irakli Gamrekeli, Lado Gudiashvili, David Kakabadze, Petre Otskheli, Niko Pirosmanashvili, Ilia and Kirile Zdanevich, and many others. Ces dernières années, le photographe belge Stephan Vanfleteren a réalisé des clichés dans son studio à la lumière du jour : la série Atelier rassemble ce corpus d'oeuvres récentes. Sur fond gris, il capture l'essence des objets et des sujets photographiés avec son esthétique caractéristique. Une danseuse, un homme âgé, la carcasse d'un martin-pêcheur, des personnalités célèbres et des inconnus, tous participent au spectacle mis en scène par le photographe qui inscrit sa pratique dans la longue tradition de la peinture classique des maitres anciens sans pour autant refuser les influences contemporains, de Michael Borremans à Irving Penn, en passant par Paolo Roversi.
En octobre 1955, l'architecte et designer viennois Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) se rend à Bruxelles à l'occasion du 50e anniversaire de la maison Stoclet, projet qui deviendra connu sous le nom de « palais Stoclet » et marquera un tournant dans sa vie et sa carrière. Le mythe entourant ce bâtiment et la culture du produit ayant émergé du savoir-faire du Wiener Werkstätte (Atelier viennois) influencent encore aujourd'hui l'étude de son oeuvre. L'exposition JOSEF HOFFMANN - Sous le charme de la beauté a été développée avec le Musée des Arts appliqués de Vienne (MAK), prend comme point de départ le travail scientifique majeur présenté dans l'exposition JOSEF HOFFMANN : Progress Through Beauty (2020/2021), et sera désormais présentée au Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Bruxelles à l'automne 2023. Ce catalogue présente donc de manière plus complète le travail de l'artiste autrichien et son évolution au cours de ses six décennies d'activité. Chaque section est centrée sur une ou plusieurs maquettes, dont une nouvelle maquette du pavillon imaginé par Hoffmann pour l'exposition du Werkbund à Cologne en 1914, qui font figure d'exemples et de références clés pour appréhender une constellation de meubles, d'objets, de designs, de textiles et de documents. Cette juxtaposition de récits couvre ainsi chaque aspect de la production artistique de Hoffmann : architecture, design, arts décoratifs, scénographie, écriture et enseignement. L'exposition se penche, en outre, sur sa méthode créative et son utilisation de la couleur.
Published to mark the 50th anniversary of Edward Steichen's death, this book presents the work of two eminent contemporary artists, the Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf (b. 1959) and the Belgian visual artist Hans Op de Beeck (b. 1969). Art historian Ruud Priem, department head and curator of fine arts at the Musée national d'histoire et d'art in Luxembourg, came up with the concept and selected the works of Olaf and Op de Beeck, thus initiating a unique collaboration. It centers on the artists' shared admiration for the oeuvre of the Luxembourg-born photographer Edward Steichen (1879-1973), and their mutual respect. The book juxtaposes Olaf's series Im Wald with watercolors and sculptures by Op de Beeck and landscape photographs by Steichen. Although very different, surprising connections emerge between the three artists in this richly varied presentation of images in black, white and shades of grey. This publication accompanies the exhibition Erwin Olaf & Hans Op de Beeck: Inspired by Steichen at the National Museum of History and Art (MNHA) in Luxembourg from 16 December 2022 to 11 June 2023, curated by Ruud Priem. Alongside their joint exhibition, Olaf and Op de Beeck are the guest curators of a selection of photos by Steichen in the MNHA's Steichen Room.
